The Hungarian Atheist Association (Magyar Ateista Társaság, MAT), based in Budapest, joins the European Secularist Network.
The Association’s aim is to secure the equal rights and treatment of Atheists in Hungary, and to fight for secularism to ensure the survival of the rule of law and democracy. We strive for our goals through advocacy work and strategic litigation, often in cooperation with other secularist, Humanist and Atheist organizations in Europe and beyond.
It runs a Facebook group for Atheists in Hungary, with 19 000 members.
The MAT currently has a number of lawsuits lined up with the strategic goal to achieve success in front of the ECHR. Some of these lawsuits are already in front of higher courts.
To highlight a few:
1. a case to force the church(es) to delete baptism records on request based on GDPR
2. a case on the census that posed suggestive question related to lifestance, and then did not allow non-religious people to designate their views akin to religious citizens.
